ZHANGYE - The home of the largest reclining Buddha in China

Zhangye is a very pleasant town of 500,000 people about 5 hours by train north of Lanzhou and our hotel was near the city square. Here in the morning of our departure are women exercising to music before the pagoda in the square. After visiting the reclining buddha (no photos allowed) we went to see the statue of Marco Polo and here he is. In about 1270 or so he spent a year in Zhangye. Marco is the most famous traveller associated with the Silk Road and on his death bed reportedly said "I have not told the half of what I saw". Well this blog is definitely living up to that motto!
