Dunhuang - gateway to the Taklamakan Desert

Dunhuang in northern Gansu is possibly the highlight of the journey so far. We have visited the 1600 year old caves at Magao - a World Heritage Site with some 600,000 visitors per annum, and it is easy to see why.
The caves have miraculously preserved intricate artworks and statues of Buddhist origins. From about 1980 these have been well protected by the Chinese authorities and restoration and conservation work continues. They cannot be photographed. The attached image shows the huge cave entrance within which there is the 3rd largest Buddha in China.
