Jiayuguan: The fort at the edge of the wilderness

We reached Jiayuguan on Friday evening having caught the train from Zhangye - a journey of about 2 hours. Due to a mix up with the taxi driver from the station and our lack of Mandarin we managed to arrive at the wrong hotel but things have worked out well as it is by far the most luxurious place we have stayed at so far and they reduced the room rate from 480 to 280 Yuan.
The day has been spent at the atmospheric Jiayuguan Fort and visiting the end of the Great Wall where there is a spectacular section rebuilt. The photos here and in the next post should give you an impression of both sites which are only a few minutes drive outside of this rather ugly but growing town which gives the appearance of being a cross between Milton Keynes and Middlesborough!
